Escha Else Bergmann Archive

Esha Else Bergman (maiden name: Burchhart) (1896-1978) was the first wife of Gershom Scholem, and the second wife of Shmuel Hugo Bergmann. She had met Scholem in Heidelberg while she was studying medicine and philosophy, and after her move to Jerusalem and his appointment at the National Library they married in 1923. After the divorce from Scholem, Escha and Hugo Bergmann married in 1936. Escha Bergmann was an early member of the "Brit Shalom" movement, a writer and worked in the administration of the National Library. The archive contains personal documents, correspondence and articles (many of them reviews) written by her.

Biographical summary Escha Bergmann (1896-1978), maiden name Burchhart, divorced Scholem. She was born in Hamburg, studied medicine and then philosophy in Heidelberg and München. In Heidelberg she was member of a circle of Zionist women around Margarete Pinner and Nelly Auerbach, here she also met in 1918 Gershom Scholem. In 1923 Escha moved to Jerusalem, and began working in the administration of the National Library under the direction of Hugo Bergmann. In the beginning she lived at the Bergmanns' house, then Gershom and Escha married and moved to a house rented from Lotte Cohn and her sister. In 1936 the Scholems divorced, also the Bergmanns, and Hugo Bergmann married Escha Scholem. Escha and the two sisters Cohn were female members of Brit Shalom. She wrote book reviews for the Jüdische Rundschau and other newspapers and articles and opinion pieces on political matters of the day.
