Advertisement directing those interested in purchasing woolen tallitot from the Hefez (Gentili) family in Venice to come or write to Asher b. Uri Hefez (Anselmo de Leon Gentili), the patriarch of the family. Issued Monday, 24 Adar 5514 (March 18, 1754). With decorative elements. The document cites numerous rabbinic sources attesting to the superiority of woolen tallitot and promises to remedy a situation in which “whole swaths of people are forced to fulfill their [biblical] obligation with tallitot made of another material.” Having been granted a monopoly on prayer shawl production by the Venetian authorities, the Gentilis were able to offer tallitot to every customer, whether “wealthy or poor.” They tout their selection, which includes simple white shawls as well as those “woven with gold and silver,” both large and small. Finally, they invite all queries, asking that these be referred to the patriarch of the family, Asher, son of Uri Hefez, also known by his Italian cognomen, Anselmo de Leon Gentili.
