הנתונים מבוססים על מידע מגויטיין, שלמה דב פרידמן, מרדכי עקיבא, ספר הודו ד (ב): חלפון הסוחר המשכיל והנוסע הגדול מכתב קצר זה מאת יהודה הלוי אל חלפון עוסק רובו ככולו בשיתוף הפעולה בין האישים הללו באיסוף שלושים ושניים מִתְקאל (= דינר מלא) ושני שלישים, כדי לפדות נערה יהודייה שנשבתה, מצווה שעל עשייתה ניצח יהודה הלוי. 'המרשעת' החזיקה בנערה, וסביר שהיא הייתה במאסר בטולדו, ושם או בסביבתה ישב כנראה יהודה הלוי (ראה TS 10J15.1, ע"ב, שורה 2). הכספים נאספו מאנשי עירו של יהודה הלוי, מן 'אלתֻרּךּ אלגֻז' (כינוי סתום), מחלפון עצמו, מיהודי מלאגה ('מאלקה') ומקהילת אליֻסַאנַה. יהודה הלוי ביקש מחלפון להאיץ באבי הנערה להביא את הכספים מן אליֻסַאנַה, ומכאן ראיה שחלפון ישב בעיר ההיא. אולם ריה"ל העלה את האפשרות שאולי יעדיף האב לשלוח את הכספים שבידו ולנסוע (מזרחה) לגרנאדה, כדי לאסוף את היתרה. נעשה מאמץ להוציא את הנערה לחופשי מן השבי לפני חגי תשרי. כיוון שמתוך העיון בתעודות אחרות נראה לי שהמפגש הראשון בין יהודה הלוי לבין חלפון יצא לפועל לאחר הגעתו של חלפון לספרד לקראת הקיץ בשנת 1138, משער אני שהמעשה קרה סמוך לתשרי של השנה ההיא. אף על פי שהמכתב היה קודש למצוות פדיון השבויה הוא נפתח בידיעה על איגרת מאת יהודה בן גִיַא̇ת ששלח יהודה הלוי אל חלפון, 'כדי לשעשעו', בוודאי בגלל הלשון המסולסלת שבה נכתבה.
