About
  • This version was published in 1949 by, Zalman (Solomon) Baruch Komaiko (Akiva's great great grandfather) in: Yiddishe Shprakh: Zhurnal far di Problemen fun der Yiddisher Klal-Shprakh. Komaiko writes: "Enclosed I send a version of a ditty (lidele) for remembering Hebrew words that I myself would sing together with other cheder boys (kheder-yingelekh) of my age. I was about ten years old at the time. We would sing the song mostly on winter nights (vinternecht), returning late from the cheder with lanterns in our hands. In my shtetl Aniksht, in the Kovno region, it was muddy and dark (blotik un finster). This little song would carry our young feet (yunge fees)… I am also appending the tune (nigen) to which we sang the ditty. ” (translated by: Yonatan Moss - Akiva's father) Akiva recorded this song as part of his family genealogy project (5th grade, Efrata Elementary School, Jerusalem).
