Text on the back -Tunisie - Jerba - La Synagogue de la Ghriba:539 Editions Tanit, 3 bis Rue El Houdeibia Tunis - Tèl.: 255.856 Impression: S.P.A.G. Tunis - Reproduction interdite;Production period - Before 1984;Front Period - UNKNOWN;Category - Jewish types;Description - This horizontal postcard depicts a color photograph of the interior of 'El Ghriba Synagogue', located in the Tunisian island of Djerba. Ghriba means marvelous or strange in Arabic and reflects the special status of this Synagogue. Indeed, this one is particularly important because according to the legend, it is one of the first Synagogues and houses one of the world's oldest Sefer Torah (The Torah Scroll). The photograph shows the entrance hall, from where one enters into the prayer room. A Jewish man is sitting alone in one of the benches, a book in his hands, in a comfortable position. We can see the rich decoration of the Synagogue interior, inspired from the local oriental architecture: the walls are decorated with earthenware with blue, white and brown motifs. [S.H.];Back Handwritten Text - We finally made it and are in fact devoting eight days to this interesting island before traveling northwards. We hope to meet up with you when we return. King regards.
