A Mellah was in Morocco the quarter where lived Jewish people. It was surrounded by high walls in order to separate Muslim from Jewish people (an analogue of the European ghetto). Jewish populations were confined to mellahs in Morocco beginning in the 15th century and especially since the 19th century. In the photograph, there is on the left side a fortified gate (as it was usual before entering to a Mellah in Morocco), called Bab el-Mellah. In the interior of the quarter, there is a lively street: Some Jewish people are sitting on the ground, other are walking. They are dressed with traditional clothes. In the background, there are houses, one close to the other. [S.H];Back Handwritten Text - Meknès 6 mai 24 (...)
