As a result, the Mellah (a walled Jewish quarter of a city in Morocco, an analogue of the European ghetto) was destroyed, houses and shops were burnt, Jews were deprived of their possessions (jewels, pieces of furniture, crockery, clothes etc.). They went to get refuge in the cemetery of the Mellah as well as in the Sultan's Palace. The postcard shows the main courtyard of the Sultan's Menageries, where Jewish people found refuge. They slept in the cages of the Menagerie which appear in the background. We can see a kind of pond in the middle of the courtyard, surrounded by a lot of Jewish people, traditionally dressed.
