A Mellah was the quarter in which lived the Jewish people in Morocco. It was surrounded by high walls, as we can see on the picture, in order to separate Muslim and Jewish peoples (an analogue of the European ghetto). The Jewish population was confined to mellahs in Morocco beginning in the 15th century, but especially since the 19th century. In the photograph, we can see the entrance of the Jewish quarter of Fez, crossed by several people, and the fortified Gate on the left side (as it usually was, before entering a Mellah in Morocco), called Bab el-Mellah.
