Text on the back -Djerba Vue intérieure de la Ghriba Edichem H.Ismail 23, Rue Es Sadikia Tunis;Back Printed Text Translation - Djerba Interior view of El Ghriba;Production period - second half of the 20th century-?;Front Period - UNKNOWN;Category - Synagogues;Description - This horizontal postcard depicts a color photograph of the interior of the El Ghriba Synagogue, located in the Tunisian island of Djerba. (For details, see the postcard hof10-0001). The photograph shows more precisely the Ark of the Synagogue, known in Hebrew as the Hekhal amongst Sephardi Jews, or the Aron Kodesh amongs Askhenazi Jews. It contains the Torah scroll and is one of the principle centers of the Jewish liturgy in the synagogue: the Ark is situated in the east wall, so that when members of the community turn in the direction of the Ark for praying, they turn in fact in the direction of Jerusalem. In the photograph, the Ark is opened to let us see the Torah scroll, written on parchment. Following the Sephardic tradition, the Sefer Torah is not robed in a mantle, but it is housed in an wooden case which protects the scroll and it is decorated with scroll-handles.
