This Arab name literally means 'the Sea Gate' and it recalls the fact that there was a time when the sea nearly reached the Gate. The 'Porte de France' is situated, as its name indicates, at the end of the France Avenue and marks the entrance of the Old City. Erected in 1848, it seems like a Triumph Arc. At its left, there is a lively street with several shops (with French names) and a lot of passers-by.
