Fol. 141v. Photograph of: Modena Mahzor
Avraham the scribe of Tivoli (Scribe) scribe
PhotographA rectangular panel beneath the text space encloses three successive scenes illustrating the text on the next folio which continues from the passage above, beginning, וירא ... ואת עמלנו, אלו הבנים. כמה שנאמר כל בן הילוד היארה תשליכהו ..., "And saw ... our toil: this refers to the sons, as it is said: 'Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river ...' (Ex. 1:22)." On the left, two Israelite midwives stand gesturing before the crowned, bearded Pharoah. He sits on his throne holding his scepter upright in his right hand and pointing with his left. The turbaned head of a male figure (possibly an advisor) is discernible behind Pharoah. At the center, men and women stand before a building by the bank of the River Nile casting male Israelite infants into the water. The heads of dead infants can also be seen floating in the water. On the right stand three women: Pharoah's daughter flanked by Moses' mother, Jochebed, on the left, and an attendant on the right. The princess wears a crown and holds out to Jochebed the baby Moses, lying in an ark and wrapped in swaddling cloths. A curved, ornamental pediment which ends in scrolls, crowns the text space.
