Title LIPKIN SHAHAK TAKES OVER On January 1, 1995 Major-General Amnon Lipkin Shahak was promoted to Lieutenant-General and took over from Lt-Gen Ehud Barak as lDF Chief of Staff, for a term of four years.
Scope and content He is the 15th Chief of Staff. At ceremonies in Tel Aviv's 'Kiria, Defence Ministry and at Prime Minister Rabin's Jerusalem office, the changeover was officially made. Shahak, born in Tel Aviv in 1944, joined the IDF in 1962 where he served as company commander in the Paratroop Brigade and then as brigade unit commander, intelligence officer, operations officer, battalion commander, deputy brigade commander and brigade commander. After a transfer to the armoured corps he served as commander of a reserve division and as commander of a standing armoured division. In October 1983 Shahak was appointed OC Northern Command and in February 1986, head of the Intelligence Branch. In 1991 he was appointed Deputy to Barak and head of the Operations Branch and in May of that year commanded Operation Solomon - which brought the Jews of.Ethiopia to Israel. In 1993 Prime Minister Rabin appointed him head of the Israel negotiating team to the talks with the Palestinians which ultimately led to the signing of the Cairo agreement. Shahak has a History degree from Tel Aviv University and has twice been decorated - for his roles in the Karameh (1968) and Aviv Neurim (1973) operations. He is married to his second wife, Tali, and has five children. Barak has meanwhile not announced his post-army career intentions although he has expressed an interest in continuing to head the military talks with Syria. He has already been appointed to head the next round of talks in Washington DC. Photo shows the new IDF Chief of 8taff Lieutenant-General Amnon Lipkin-Shahak.
