Title ISRAEL AND JORDAN SIGN PEACE TREATY.
Scope and content Another historic day passed in Israel October 26, 1994, when Israel and Jordan signed a formal peace treaty in the Arava. Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and his Jordanian counterpart Abdul Salam Majali signed for their countries the treaty negotiated since the Hussein-Rabin Washington Declaration of July 25 1994. In the presence of Jordan's King Hussein, special guest US President Bill Clinton, Israel President Ezer Weizmant Jordan's Crawn Prince Hassan, Foreign Minister Peres, US Secretary of State Christopher, Foreign Minister Kozyrev of Russia and a host of other dignitaries, the ceremony began with the Israel, Jordan and US' national anthems. Before the signing, verses from the Koran and the Torah were read, presentations of flowers were made by Israeli and Jordanian granddaughters of soldiers who fell in the 1967 war, and speeches were given by Hussein, Rabin, Christopher, Peres and Clinton. King Hussein, speaking without notes said: "This is peace with dignity, this is peace with commitment, this is our gift to our peoples and the generations to come". Later when questioned by a reporter from Israel Television, the Hashemite King proclaimed simply:- "This is the best day of my life". Rabin called the peace “the peace of soldiers and the peace of friends". He continued: "the peace that was born today gives us all the hope that the children born today will never know war between us - and their mothers will know no sorrow". US President Clinton commended the two leaders on their brave peace moves and at the same time warned them of the attempts that will undoubtedly be made by extremist opponents of peace to disturb the peace: “We will not let them succeed". The parliaments of the two countries will now ratify the treaty which details all aspects of relations between the two sides including: the establishment of a new international border between the two sides, security, diplomatic, economic and cultural relations, water,.
