ISRAEL AND JORDAN OPEN THEIR BORDERS. |
---|---|
Scope and content |
Ever since the State of Israel's establishment in 1948, she has been in a state of war with the neighbour that shared more of Israel's border than any other country - Jordan. that state of war was ended with the Washington Declaration of 15 July 1994 and finally put into effect on the ground, 8 August 1994, in the Arava. There, Israel Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Jordan's Crown Prince Hassan opened the first border crossing between the two countries 6 kilometres north of Eilat, in the presence of US Secretary of State Warren Christopher, Israel Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, Jordanian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abdel Salaam EI-Majali and a large assortment of other dignitaries. Rabin and Hassan cut a ribbon to work the opening of the border crossing - meanwhile open only to Israelis with foreign passports - with scissors handed to them by a pair of specially chosen young local Israeli and Jordanian girls. Prime Minister Rabin said in his speech: - “Friends say to us - The pace of events is too fast. We cannot keep up. Wait a moment'. Your Royal Highness, our friends in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, we have waited forty-six years. We have gone through war, pain and suffering. To prevent further loss and sorrow, we cannot wait even one day more”. Crown Prince Hassan's speech was a visionary one: "The Aqaba-Eilat border gate represents a physical demonstration of our desire to promote inter-regional transportation networks...Our region is the birth place of civilization...In this gateway be a taken of our resolve that soon our peoples will be able to sharp, exchange and marvel at their common legacy". Photo shows Israel Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Jordan's King Hussein, having removed their neck-ties, inside the King's Aqaba Palace in Jordan, 8 August 1994. Between the two is the King's brother Crown Prince Hassan and on the left of the picture the Director-General of Rabin's office Shimon Sheves. |
