Additional Titles Land Day. [picture]
Scope and content Land Day - which commemorates the 1976 land expropriation protest in which 6 Israeli Arabs where killed by police, passed without major violent incident throughout the country, 30 March 1994. This was achieved after agreement to that effect was reached by Israel's police chiefs and leaders of the Arab community. Police Inspector-General Rafi Peled called the day a matriculation certificate for the Arabs of lsrael.
The day's major observance of the anniversary was in the Negev Desert's Bedouin town of Rahat - where Mohammed Abu 'Jama was killed by police in disturbances after the Hebron massacre in February. Violence threatened to break out at one point between a section of the crowd chanting and intent on setting fire to an Israeli flag and another section - of Bedouin moderates -- who succeeded in stopping the burning. A scuffle broke out but there were no serious injuries. Member of Knesset (MK) for Hadash - the Communist Party - Hashem Mahameed spoke to the crowd about the Hebron massacre Baruch Goldstein was not the only person to hold such views...All the settlers are racist and as long as there are settlements, more acts of slaughter can be expected. Meretz Member of Knesset Haim Oron, drew cheers when he told the assembly that Israel has no reason to rule over the territories and should enable the Palestinian people to establish a state. Photo shows: some of the leaders of Israel's Arab community leading the start of prayers during the Land Day commemorative ceremony on 30 March 1994 in Rahat. From right can be seen Taleh a-Sanaa - MK for the Arab Democratic Party, Tamar Gozanskv - MK for Hadash, Ibrahim Nima Hussein - Head of the Council of Arab Villages and Municipalities, Nima Darwishe - Head of the Islamic Movement of Israel and Abd AI-Wahab Darawshe - Member of Knesset and Leader of the Arab Democratic Party.
