Title BUDIST LEADER IN ISRAEL.
Scope and content The Dalai Lama (Tensin Gyatso), the leader of 120 million Buddhists, arrived in Israel an Sunday 20 March 1994 for a four-day visit as the guest of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI). The Nobel Peace Prize winner of 1989 was - on the day of his arrival - awarded an honorary degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem “in recognition of his contributions to world peace through non-violent conflict resolution and his fostering of religious and cultural pluralism". In his thank you speech the Dalai Lama put his faith in the current Israel-Arab peace process: "I'm sure you'll not only survive but you'll overcome your problems so that there will be genuine peace. Peace is a mental act and genuine human compassion is a central component", The Buddhist leader also visited religious sites and met local religious leaders including those of the Druze and the Bahai in the north of the country. He was due to give an address on "Ethics and Environmental Ideology" to participants of the SPNI's 40th anniversary celebrations in Eilat, Performing at the celebrations will be famous American jazz musician Paul Winter. The Dalai Lama has lived in India since 1959 - exiled by the Chinese from his Tibetan home, The Chinese are anxious that any legitimacy accorded to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetans will undermine their rule of the area. No Israeli government official met the Dalai Lama officially but the Tibetan spiritual leader was - as always - understanding of Israel's position: "His holiness specifically wanted this to be a personal pilgrimage to pay homage at the sites holy to three great religions, The intention “was not to meet with political leaders" said a spokesman
