RABIN MEETS EGYPTIAN FOREIGN MINISTER. |
---|---|
Scope and content |
Egyptian Foreign Minister Amru Musa came to Israel with the initial purpose of meeting PM Itzhak Rabin to discuss the stalled Israel-Syria peace talks. Although this ramained of the agenda, it was overshadowed by the week's suspension of Israel-Palestinian peace talks in Taba. Musa said that Syrian President Hafez Assad refuses to have Egypt mediate between two sides of to hold secret talks with Israel. The only method of negotiation with Israel that it will accept is with the US acting as mediator. Israel Foreign Minister Shumon Peres said after his talks with Musa, "I do believe that next week will enable all of us to see the ongoing negotiations taking place, so we shall be able to keep to the agreed timetable". Musa confirmed: " What was termed as a crisis was but a mini-crisis". I'm glad that my talks here have been very successful.".
