Title מזכיר המדינה האמריקני בישראל.
Additional Titles US Secretary of State in Israel. [picture]
Scope and content From an Israeli standpoint the visit of U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher can be regarded as having been very positive. Unlike his predecesser, Christopher has been much more even-handed while maintaining the true spirit of U.S./Israeli relations. Christopher was taken on an extended helicopter tour of the northern part of Israel to see for hieself the scale of the geography that requires Israel to maintain a strong presence on border areas. The Secretary of State said, following his air tour, that he was much clearer in his own mind as to the preblems having actually seen it for himself. Christopher was in no mood to be dicatated to by the Palastinians. Already the delegation has pulled back from its unaccep- table conditions to resume the peace process. The Palestinians now realize that they will be the main losers by not agreeing to continue the peace process. The deportee issue that the Palestinians had hoped would strengthen their hand has been down-graded by the U.S. This perhaps is the U.S. administration's tacit acceptance of the true role of most of the deportees and the fact that the new Clinton administration is going to be far less ambigious on iternational matters. Maybe in the not too distant future a terrorist will be labled as a terrorist, rather than be described ostensibly as a 'freedom fighter or 'civil rights campaigner'. The Arab states themselves are also fighting the rise of Islamic fundamentalism which can tear their countries apart. Photo shows: Secretary of State Warren Christopher (L) and Chief of Saff Ehud Barak listening to an explantion of Israel's strategic problems in a lecture given by Major-General Itzhak Mordechai, overlooking the Israel/Lebanese border. Mordechai is the commander of Israel's northern district.
