Title Eighty-four Moslem refugees from war-torn Bosnia arrived in Israel today on a direct flight from Zagreb in Croatia, arranged by the French Jewish community.
Scope and content The refugees were invited to come to Israel and remain here as long as they wished. This gesture was made by Israel as a contribution to alleviate the suffering of the Bosnians. Israeli Arab leaders had been pushing the government to make a gesture to the Bosnian Moslems. At first it was arranged that the refugees would be housed in temporary housing next to two Israeli Arab towns of Um-el-Fahm and Tira. Just a few days before the refugees were due to arrive council heads of several Arab towns including Um-el-Fahm and Tira began to oppose the government's gesture. This opposition was orchestrated by the Arab Hadash party in the Knesset, Their opposition was based on the fact that the Bosnian authorities had not given their permission for the flight, which in the event was not even true. Then the Arab leadership said that their acceptance of the refugees will be a political point for Israel. In the end the government stated that they will accept the Bosnians with or without the help of the Arabs. after their arrival in Israel the Bosnians were taken by bus to the field school at Ma'agan Michael were they received a warm welcome from field school staff as well as scores of Arabs from neighboring villages. Photo shows: 84 Moslem refugees from Bosnia arrived to Israel to awoid the massacre they faced in their country.
