Scope and content |
Shitrit was appointed to the post on February 21,1995 just as Tourism Minister Uzi Baram received the Interior portfolio. Boh ministries had been left vacant awaiting the expected return of Shas to the Government. Now that Shas' return has been put on indefinite hold, the caretaker head of the ministries, Prime Minister Rabin, had no alternative but to distribute the portfolios. His choice of new ministers however, deeply upset Meretz MK Yossi Sarid who had expected the Interior post. Sarid's threats to resign however were soon muted after he met with Rabin. The PM told the press afterwards: “l value Sarid as a Minister who contributes a great deal to the government and in the diplomatic field”. Photo shows: Prof. Shimon Shitrit held a press conference on his plan to change the law on mortage. |
