Title גשם.
Additional Titles Rain. [picture]
Scope and content The saying, it never rains but it pours, could be applied to Israel over the past two weeks. Storms brought torrential rains to all parts of the country. In some places the rainfall was the highest on record for more than fifty years. In Gaza 440 mm has fallen so far this year, 10% more than the yearly average. In the north between 30% ~ 50% of the average has already fallen, while in the central region the figure is between 50% --. 70%. There was much flooding in the country, particularly in the central part of Israel. In Tel-Aviv and surrounding places, traffic came to a total standstill, as rainwater soon came half way up the doors of cars caught on low lying roads. Some journeys of about ten kilometres were taking up to five flours to complete as people tried to make their way home at the end of the working day. Two soldiers were drowned and their bodies washed away, Then an army lorry they were traveling in, turned over into a flooded ditch in a big army camp in the central region. In parts of Ashdod, apartment owners were, for a time, trapped in their homes as water rose several metres when the usually dry nahal (wadi) Lachish overflowed from flash floods caused by the downfall. The Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) has added 12 cm since the start of the bad weather, but there is still a long nay to go to make up for the shortfall in the level of the lake, which is still dangerously low and needing over two metres of rain to return to its normal end of winter level. Scientist at Jerusalem's Hebrew University predicted a few month ago very heavy rain in the Jerusalem area, due to this years volcanic eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines. The eruption, one of the biggest this century, sent volcanic debris and gases into the upper atmosphere. The particles in the upper atmosphere cause partial temporary blacking of sunlight for about a year following the eruption, causing a lowering of temperature on earth and leading to an increase in air-water temperature.
