HOMELESS FAMILIES THREATEN TO KILL THEMSELVES. |
---|---|
Scope and content |
Members of homeless families threatened to pour petrol over themselves and set light to it if they were not found homes, The two families have been living for the past year in Ashdod's King Shaul hotel. Police and fire officials were called to the hotel when three members of the families appeared on the balcony and said they would set light to themselves if they 'were not found permanent homes. Knesset members Charlie Biton and Ran Cohen came to the scene and persuaded the protestors not to follow through on their threat by arranging a compromise meeting between the Mayor of Ashdod and the government building company Amidar. The homeless crisis has come into focus again because of the last remaining families who still have to be settled, A certain amount of pressure has been removed because of the relative drop in Soviet immigration, thus the present housing construction in progress will soon be able to alleviate the waiting list for new homes as well as hopefully returning the rental market to its proper proportion. It was the high cost of rentals in the private sector, due to housing shortages, that meant many families could not afford to renew leases. Photo shows: The picture shows members of two families threatening to set light to themselves if no solution is found to their housing problem. |
