WATER PRICES MAY DOUBLE. |
---|---|
Scope and content |
Agriculture Minister Rafael Eitan has indicated that the price of water may have to double because of the chronic shortage of fresh water in Israel, Eitan was speaking at the opening of Water-Conservation Week exhibition in Tel-Aviv. The week: long exhibition is designed to make the public aware of the large variety of devices available on the market for saving water in every aspect of daily life. Already farmers have been told that quotas for this year are to be drastically cut back: and local authorities have also to make savings in the watering of parks and gardens. The rain season is almost at an end and any 'worth while' rainfall from now on would be as a result of freak: weather conditions developing in the region. The early part of this winter was noted for its poor rains and although in the latter part of the season there has been substantial rain, the shortfall is still vast. Unfortunately, although many parts of the country received more than the average rain for the season, the Kinneret basin has received less than average. The Kinneret ( Sea of Galilee ) is Israels largest source of sweet water and there is still a short fail of two metres in the lake's water level. The present water crisis must in a large part be due to the excessive and wasteful use of limited water reserves over the past few years. It is also true to say that, like many parts of the world, Israel's weather has been affected by global warming and both the amount and distribution of winter rains have been detrimentally affected.
