Title BRITISH FOREIGN MINISTER ARRIVES IN ISRAEL.
Scope and content Douglas Hurd, the British Foreign Secretary, arrived in Israel today for a three day visit. Hurd flew in direct from Egypt this afternoon, where he had been on a similar visit. He was met by Foreign Minister David Levy at Ben Gurion airport. He left the airport without making a statement. Hurd's visit to Israel comes with much controversy as he has been very critical of Israel, in particular the Israeli government's refusal to receive officially the Security Council delegation who want to come to Israel to investigate the Temple Mount riots. The attitude of the British Foreign Office has always been one of tacit support for the Arab countries as these countries represent a vast potential for British arms sales. Hurd has always been outspoken on matters relating to Israel, but he has failed to level equal criticism to Israel's enemies. While he keeps pushing Israel to negotiate with the P.L.O. he does not apply the same logic to Britain dealing with the I.R.A. Within Israel well over 200 Arabs have been brutally murdered by their fellow Arabs as the terrorists try to control the Arab population in Israel and encourage hate and dissension. Mr. Hurd will no doubt will be true to form offering advice, but ignoring the constant cries of hate from Arab countries who do nothing to help settle the Palestinian question, but do everything to keep tension on the boil. Saudi Arabia, although facing a desperate situation frow the north, still finds time to issue the most virulent anti-Semitic comments that have parallels from Nazi Germany. Needless to say not a word on this matter has been heard from Mr. Hurd or Mr. Baker. The picture shows Douglas Hurd (L) being welcomed at Ben Gurion Airport by Foreign Minister David Levy this afternoon.
