The Knesset ( Israel's parliament ) opened its winter session today in Jerusalem. |
---|---|
Scope and content |
The plenum was full with members who came to hear a debate on the Temple Mount riots that occurred last week. Prime Minister Shamir opened the winter term with a short speech regretting the loss of life on the Temple Mount, but pointing out that the cause was the action of a criminally incited mob. We went on to say that the Security Council condemnation of Israel was one sided as it made no mention of the stone throwing on to Jewry's most holy place. Labour party chairman Shimon Peres, while agreeing that the Security Council was wrong in its resolution, attacked Shamir for closing off every option of dialogue with the Palestinians. Peres said that Shamir's remarks about 'a large Israel' and the Jerusalem issue drew international fire unnecessarily. The reaction of subsequent speakers was mixed, but predictable according to party lines. Several opposition parties tabled a motion of no confidence in the government that will be heard next week.
