In January 6,170 new immigrants arrived in Israel. |

Scope and content |
most of these olim were from Russia. In 1989 a total of just under 25 thousand immigrants arrived in the whole year. It has not been an easy month for the Russian olim. It had been hoped that the agreement between Aeroflot and El AI, due to have taken effect on 1st January, would have been ratified by the Soviet government. This was not done, so the much awaited direct flights from Russia have not come about, causing long delays for these who want to came. In addition a lot of pressure has been applied by the Arab States on the Soviet government to stop the Jews leaving Russia. Matters were not helped by an ill timed speech by the Prime Minister, Yitzhak Shamir, declaring that ‘Jews could settle any¬where in the Land of Israel.' If all this was not enough, work sanctions had been threatened by Absorption Ministry workers, who said that they were both overworked and underpaid. At the moment the olim continue to come in their thousands every month. In most cases the average Israeli is doing all he can to help both on an individual and communal level. Photo shows: a teacher, Maya Yanovsky, originally from Russia helping ( on her left ) Yanek a new immigrant from Leningrad, who came to Israel three months ago. Next to Yanek is Yitzhak, a new Ethiopian immigrant who also came to Israel three months ago. The school is situated in Holon, south of Tel-Aviv. |
