The first Symposium on Germanic Linguistics was organized at the University of Chicago by Jan Terje Faarlund. The notable success of this undertaking led Elmer H. Antonsen, Hans Henrich Hock, and James W. Marchand to arrange the Second Symposium on Germanic Linguistics at the University of Illinois.
