"גיורא בר ניר (Jerzy Rabiner) נולד בוורשה ב-1936. אביו היה מהנדס, ועם תחילת המלחמה, ב-1 בספטמבר 1939, גויס בדרגת קצין לצבא הפולני, ביחד עם אלפי קצינים פולנים נשבה על ידי הרוסים, ובאביב 1940 הומצאו כולם להורג בפקודתו של סטלין במקום שנודע כעיר קאטין. גיורא ואצו עברו להתגורר בגטו ורשה. בינואר 1943 ברחו שניהם לצד הארי של ורשה. תחילה גיורא לבדו, והוא אז בן שש, ואחר כך הצטרפה אליו אמו. הם הוסתרו בבית חברתו הפולנייה של דודו, אך בשלב מסוים עברה אמו למחבוא אחר בוורשה, אצל אחותה של אותה חברה. בעקבות הלשנה התגלה המחבוא, וכל דיירויו הוצאו להורג בידי אנשי ס"ס. גיורא המשיך להסתתר בדירות שונות בוורשה, ובמרוצת 1944 הגיע למשפחה פולנית בכפר ליד ורשה. אצלם התגורר עד שהסתיימה המלחמה. אז נשלח ל"בית הילד", פנימייה ליד ורשה (ב-Zatrzebie), וב-1946, ביחד עם ילדים יהודים אחרים, נשלח לצרפת ושהה שם שנתיים, עד עלייתו לארץ ישראל, באוקטובר 1948. ..." -- מעטפת אחורית.
