"החיבור שלפנינו בוחן את לשונו של קורפוס קטן אך חשוב מאוד לחקר תולדות העברית: תעודות מדבר יהודה שבין המרד הגדול למרד בר כוכבא - קבוצה של שטרות משפטיים, איגרות צבאיות וכתובות עבריות אחרות מחיי היום-יום, שנכתבו במדבר יהודה ובסביבותיו והתגלו במאה העשרים במערות המפלט שלחופו המערבי של ים המלח ובמצדה. חשיבותן הלשונית של התעודות בעדות שהן מוסרות - עדות בלתי מתווכת על גבי שברי חרסים ויריעות פפירוסי ועור - על דמותה של העברית בתקופה רבת התהפוכות שבין חורבן הבית השני לחתימת המשנה ... ספרו של אורי מלר מתאר ומאפיין את העברית הזאת ומברר את מעמדה בדיאלקטולוגיה העברית ובמרחב הסוציולינגוויסטי של ארץ ישראל. עיונו בפרטי הלשון ובתמונה העולה מהם מגלה שבתקופה זו העברית הייתה לשון חיה ביהודה, למרות השפעתה הגדולה של הארמית, ושהייתה קרובה מאוד - אך לא זהה - ללשון חז"ל". -- כריכה אחורית.
