Kurt Gerstein ou l'Ambiguité du bien

Enlarge text Shrink text

Discusses the personality and inner conflicts of Kurt Gerstein (1905-1945), an active member of the Confessing Church, who nevertheless joined the SS in 1941. He tried to alert the world about the extermination of the Jews, which he witnessed as the person at the SS's Hygiene Institute responsible for supplying Zyklon B to death camps. Highlights that his attempts to inform foreign diplomats (including the Vatican envoy), German church circles, and the Dutch resistance about the gassings (mainly in Bełżec) acquire increased significance when viewed against the backdrop of German passivity, the lack of response of the Allies and neutral countries, and Christian Europe's public silence regarding the Holocaust. Examines, also, the controversial issue of Gerstein's suicide in 1945 in a French prison, where he was held as a war criminal. The epilogue by Poliakov is on pp. 193-203.
