"בגיל ארבעים ושתיים מבינה דורה הופשטטר-ירדני ־ מורה לספרות והיסטוריה בתיכון בכפר-סבא, רעיה לשמוליק ואם לשני מתבגרים ־ כי היא "אישה שרוצה לאהוב אך לא יכולה". היא משתוקקת לאהוב את בעלה, ילדיה, אמה ותלמידיה, היא משתוקקת לאהוב את חייה, אלא שמשאביה הרגשיים הולכים וכלים. כמורה לספרות וכאישה החותרת למודעות עצמית, מכירה דורה את מיטב יצירות הספרות והקולנוע ואמונה על ניתוח נפשן של הדמויות ספרותיות, אלא שאצלה, בחייה ־ דבר אינו ברור. ואז נופל בחייה של דורה דבר, מקרה שכיח, זניח לכאורה. אל תיבת הדואר בביתה מגיע בטעות מכתב המיועד לאישה חיפאית ששמה וכתובתה דומים. "בטעות" נפתח המכתב ונקרא, ומאותו הרגע משתנים באחת חייה של דורה, והיא נשאבת בעוצמה אובססיבית למסע בלשי הזוי בעקבות "כפילתה" החיפאית וסיפור אהבתה הסבוכה, מסעה שעובר בעיר התחתית של חיפה, בכפרים בגליל, ובתוך מפגשים עם זרים גמורים. בתוך כך מתעמתת דורה לראשונה בחייה עם עברה, יחסיה עם בן-זוגה, ילדיה ומשפחתה ועם כברת הדרך שעשתה בחייה" -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
