Begins with the story of the annihilation of the Jewish community of Buczacz in Eastern Galicia. The genocide was perpetrated by the Nazis with the help of Ukrainian auxiliary police and nationalists. Argues that the Soviet occupation of Buczacz in 1939-41 is hardly sufficient as an explanation of why the locals collaborated with the Nazis in the genocide of Jews; the complicated history of inter-ethnic relations also has to be taken into account. While reflecting on modern genocide, calls for the development of two different yet related strategies in the study of this phenomenon: the investigation of discrete cases of mass murder within a larger historical context and a close examination of individual instances of mass killing that formed part of an entire genocidal undertaking.
