Analyzes changes in the attitude of the Catholic Church toward the Jews since Vatican Council II, including the moral and theological questioning of Christian conscience under the impact of the Shoah. Traces the origin of the separation of Christianity from Judaism, and surveys the developments from Christian anti-Judaism to modern antisemitism, emphasizing the effects of the deicide accusation and the Church's "teaching of contempt". Analyzes Pope Pius XII's silence during World War II. Discusses Jewish vs. Christian commemoration of the Shoah in reference to the Auschwitz Carmelite convent affair. Examines recent Church statements: the "Nostra Aetate" declaration of 1965; the French episcopal document of 1973; Roman texts of 1975, 1985, and 1998; the 1993 agreement between the Vatican and Israel; the French declaration of repentance made in Drancy in 1997; and Pope John Paul II's historical gesture at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem in 2000.
