Death on the Black Sea

Enlarge text Shrink text

Recounts the story of the refugee ship "Struma", which departed from Constanţa, Romania in December 1941 with the aim of bringing Jews who were fleeing from the Nazis to Palestine. The ship was held up in the Black Sea, and then torpedoed in February 1942. Ca. 800 people died; the sole survivor was David Stoliar. The account is presented in the context of Nazi-occupied Europe, Britain's closure of Palestine to Jewish immigration, Turkey's anti-Jewish attitudes, and the USSR's desire to control the Black Sea. Romanian antisemitism was the impetus that drove the "Struma" passengers to flee and seek refuge. A descendant of one of the drowned passengers found the site of the sunken ship and a memorial ceremony was held there.
