Surveys the history of the Jewish community in Częstochowa from the late 18th century. Mentions, briefly, pogroms which took place there in 1902, 1919, and 1937. Pt. 3 (pp. 95-149) discusses the fate of the community in the Holocaust. Describes the German occupation in September 1939, a pogrom which took place on 25 December 1939, the functioning of the Judenrat, life in the large ghetto from April 1941 and its liquidation in September-October 1942, and life in the small ghetto from November 1942. Some of the Jews in the small ghetto, who had heard about the mass murders in Treblinka, formed resistance groups, but their efforts were largely unsuccessful. The small ghetto was liquidated on 25-26 June 1943, and ca. 4,000 Jews remained to work in two HASAG labor camps in the city. By fall 1944 there were ca. 11,000 Jews working there, in four HASAG labor camps. In January 1945, ca. 5,000 Jews were liberated by the Soviet army; the others had been sent shortly before to concentration camps in Germany.
