A memoir of his life and actions during the war period (1939-44) by a Polish underground courier, a liaison officer between the Polish government-in-exile in London and the Polish underground. Chs. 29-30 (pp. 320-354) describe his encounter with the Nazi persecution of the Polish Jews. In October 1942, Karski met in Warsaw with two representatives of the Jewish underground who were living and operating on the "Aryan side". They put forward a demand that the Allies and the Jewish leadership of the free world undertake to save at least part of Polish Jewry. They arranged to have him smuggled into the Warsaw ghetto in order for him to see for himself, and be able to report, the inhuman conditions under which the Jews were being held. He also visited a Nazi death camp, probably Bełźec, and actually witnessed a Nazi murder of Jews. He states that "never in the history of mankind... did anything occur to compare with what was inflicted on the Jewish population of Poland".
