Emancipation and its discontents

Enlarge text Shrink text

Examines the 150 years of Jewish-German coexistence as a failed Enlightenment project for Jewish-Gentile relations. The formula of this project was assimilation of the Jews into the broader society in return for their emancipation. Despite the apprehensions many Jews felt regarding the extent of this assimilation, they chose this formula. However, the broader society was reluctant to accept them as members. Moreover, the Jewish entry into elite positions, especially those in the realm of culture, provoked a negative reaction. The emergence of political antisemitism at the end of the 19th century showed the Jews that the way of the Enlightenment project might be more thorny than they anticipated - they created defense organizations, Jewish consciousness began to grow, and the tendency to organizational separatism appeared. 1933 saw the collapse of the entire Enlightenment edifice.
