The last deposit

Based on documentary research and interviews, discusses the concealment by Swiss banks of accounts of Jewish Holocaust victims. Relates efforts made by victims' relatives to retrieve their possessions from the 1950s on, and the deception practiced by Swiss bankers, who claimed that most of the accounts had been closed and that the amounts in the unclaimed accounts were minimal. Describes the difficulties in tracing Jewish accounts for various reasons, e.g. some accounts were under names of corporations and some Jews deposited money in accounts of non-Jewish lawyers or friends. Discusses the roles of Alfonse D'Amato, Edgar Bronfman, and Avraham Burg in revealing the Swiss banks' deception and in negotiations with the Swiss government in the 1990s. Relates, also, efforts made by the U.S. and Israel immediately after the war to convince Swiss bankers to release money in Jewish unclaimed accounts in order to help Jewish refugees, and how the banks evaded complying with this request.
