Die Ermordung einer Stadt namens Stanislau

Enlarge text Shrink text

An expanded version of a series broadcast in 1974-75 on Austrian radio for schoolchildren. After discussing Nazi policy in Poland in general, the second part of the book deals with the Holocaust. Describes, as a case study, the fate of the Jews of Stanislawów, in Galicia (ca. 42,000 Jews in 1938). During the Soviet occupation, many Poles and Jews were deported eastward and Jewish refugees from western Poland replaced them. When the Germans invaded in July 1941, Hans Krüger was appointed head of the Sicherheitsdienst in Stanislawów. Jews in the academic professions were immediately shot. On October 6 he carried out the massacre of several thousand Jews in the nearby town of Nadworna, and on 12 October ca. 12,000 Jews of Stanislawów were shot in an all-day action. The rest were confined in a ghetto. In March 1942 a large transport was sent to Bełżec. The ghetto was liquidated in February 1943. Describes the concentration and extermination camps and the Auschwitz war crimes trial (1966-68). Quotes from testimonies of Nazis who took part in the massacre of Stanislawów and elsewhere, as well as Jewish eyewitnesses.
