- Hirsch was a lecturer in laryngology and rhinology at the Medical School of the University of Vienna until he was barred from his position in 1938. He fled to Boston, where he worked in various hospitals. He received American citizenship in 1944. On his headed notepaper in America his name is spelled Oscar.
