EG was born in Vienna 1929 and raised in an assimilated family. His father's family originally came from Galicia, Poland; his mother was from Vienna. They didn't observe Jewish holidays, celebrating Christmas instead. His father was a Zionist and in 1937 he visited kibbutzim in Palestine. In 1939, his mother also visited Palestine. His parents divorced while he was a child. After the Anschluss, EG and his mother immigrated to England, while his father left to Palestine. His mother married for a second time into the Rothschild family. In 1942, EG moved to the United States at the age of 14. As a student, he later studied at Columbia University in New York City. He married a Jewish woman from Berlin but divorced her and remarried. In 1950, EG's father died in Israel. EG and his wife travelled to Israel and lived there for four and a half years. EG returned to the USA and he finished his dissertation in anthropology.
