Born Derbent (northern Caucasia) to family of mountain Jews. Father worked as head of factory. Mother - housewife, mother of four. Lived in community of only mountain Jews. Discusses: studies in Russian school, with other Jews; religious observance in family - on mother's side religious, on father's side assimilated; father's donations to synagogue; growing up with no knowledge of Judaism; starting to learn about Israel with Six Day War; decision to make Aliyah because of impact of Six Day War; Aliyah, 1976; parents' Aliyah, 1983. Born Moscow to assimilated family. Received no Jewish education, knew nothing of Yiddish. Was forbidden from registering for university because of being Jewish. Instead went to Teacher's College, where they accepted Jews. Studied History. Discusses: friendships with non-Jews; realizing in college the significance of being Jewish; beginning to study Hebrew and Jewish history; organizing group of Jewish students to learn about Judaism; being sent to work as teacher following studies; importance Judaism has for him.
