Born 04/22/1915, Wismar. Education: 1923-25 Thalmud- Torah- school in Hamburg, 1925-31 high school in Berlin. Commercial apprenticeship in Berlin 1931-33. Emigration: 1933 with family. Career: helped in father's book shop. Took over the book shop with his brother. Interview: Born in Wismar, hasn't been to Europe since the turn. Memories of Muenster. Father: war translator. First European book shop in Israel: founded in 1908 by his father. Father had to go back to Germany. Zionist upbringing as motive for book shop. Text books in German. 1918 continuation of book shop in apartment in Berlin until 1933. 1932 death of mother, 1925 second marriage of father -> half brother. Father emigrated with certificate. Commercial apprenticeship, work in management. 1 year of training in a book shop in London. 1978 takeover of book shop. Father died at the age of 100. 1933 father could take everything with him. 1933 new opening. Purely academic. Slow development of German literature. Father was in Israel twice between 1914 and 1933. Wanted to emigrate in 1929. Did not know Hebrew. Zionist youth movement. Conversation with Mirjam DuNour: linguist, born 1927, parents emigrated in 1922 from Prague, went back to Prague in 1930. Father engineer, mother went to Israel with children in 1935, return to Prague in 1936. 1939 back to Israel. Mayer's brother went to school in Israel. About his brother and his son. About the German of immigrants. Language situation: German at home, Hebrew with ; children, parents spoke German. About the influence of the parental home. Youngest son speaks German.
