Born in Mosciska, Galicia, 1908. Family's life in Vienna during World War I. Secular and Judaic Studies. Ordained as Rabbi. Studied philology of Eastern languages at Breslau University. Doctoralþ degree, 1932. T: Aramaic names in Tadmoric inscriptions. Spent year in Israel advancing his Arabic language skills and attending Judaic studies at Hebrew University (HU). Aliyah to Israel, 1933. Secretary of Hebrew Language Committee (HLC), 1934-1950. Among first members of Hebrew Language Academy (HLA), 1953, and president from 1973 onwards. Study of Arabic from Arabs in old city, Jerusalem. Member of Hagana. Member of HU faculty from 1948 onwards. Joined Israeli Army, 1948. Compiled dictionary of military terms that remained unpublished. Research of connection between Hebrew and Aramaic after Biblical period. Research on Samaritans' Bible and their Hebrew and Aramaic. Part in compilation of Historic Dictionary of the Hebrew Language at HLA. Laureate of Israel Prize for Jewish Studies, 1964 and Rothschild Prize, 1971.
