Born in Vienna, 1917, to a secular Czech family. Family returned to Czechoslovakia shortly after his birth. Advanced studies in classical philology and German during Nazi occupation. Religious observance began while still in Czechoslovakia and orthodoxy adopted after arrival in Israel, 1939. Studied classical philology, Jewish and general history at Hebrew University (HU). Academic research on Philo of Alexandria. Based Master's thesis on quotes from Cicero found in mediaeval works of Johans of Salisbury. Taught Czech to prospective immigrants to Czechoslovakia. Research on "Josippon", 1945. Return to Czechoslovakia, 1947-1950. Editorial work on Haenzyklopedya Haivrit. Doctorate, 1955. Offer from Prof. Gershom Sholem to join Department of Religion. Specialized in Christianity. Member of Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 1980. Recipient of Israel Prize for work on "Josippon". Imperssions of first generation of teachers at HU.
