Description
The collection contains historical documents relating to the lives of Meyer and Baila (nee Shprintzes) Hoffman and their relatives in Ukraine, Argentina and the USA from 1916 to 1940. The majority of the collection consists of Meyer and Baila Hoffman's correspondence with relatives and friends. For example, there are undated letters in Yiddish from Chaia (Shprintzes) to her children, greetings in Russian and Yiddish from Male, Tscharne and Rachel. There are also letters from Baila’s sister, Doba in Buenos Aires. The letters mention issues of emigration, everyday life, work and marriage. Meyer Hoffman’s personal documents from Russia are also included in the collection. For instance, there is confirmation of Meyer’s army service from 1916, and confirmation from 1917 that Meyer completed courses equivalent to 4 grades of gymnasium. The collection also contains a photograph of a young man, Ben Zion Zinberg, in Lvov (March 22, 1921), and some receipts.
