Biographical summary דב נוי (1920-2013) נולד בקולומיאה, פולין, עלה ארצה בשנת 1938. במלחמת העולם השניה שירת בצבא הבריטי, ולאחר מכן יצא בשליחות לקפריסין שם שימש כמורה ומנהל הפעילות התרבותית במחנות העקורים. בשנת 1949 החל לערוך את העיתון "דבר לילדים" יחד עם שמשון מלצר, ובהמשך היה חבר מערכת "דבר" ועורך המדור "מפי העם" בעיתון לעולים "אומר".
דב נוי נחשב אבי חקר הפולקלור והספרות העממית באקדמיה הישראלית. עם עלייתו ארצה ב-1938 החל דב נוי את לימודיו באוניברסיטה העברית, למד היסטוריה, תלמוד ומקרא, והשלים תואר ראשון ושני. בשנת 1952 יצא ללמוד בארצות הברית, שם השלים את התואר השלישי שלו בלימודי פולקלור, ספרות השוואתית ואנתרופולוגיה באוניברסיטת ייל ובאוניברסיטת אינדיאנה. לאחר מכן שב ארצה והחל ללמד ספרות עברית ויידיש באוניברסיטה העברית, ולימים עמד בראש החוג לספרות עברית באוניברסיטה. בשנת 1962 התמנה לפרופסור לפולקלור באוניברסיטת חיפה, ובהמשך לימד בקתדראות בארץ ובחו"ל. בשנת 1955 הקים את המוזיאון לאתנולוגיה ולפולקלור בחיפה, ובתוכו את ארכיון הסיפור העממי בישראל (אסע"י), בו תיעד סיפורים ומסורות עממיות של עדות רבות, בעיקר ע"י תיעוד בעל פה של העולים למדינת ישראל. בשנת 2017 הוכר אסע"י ע"י אונסק"ו כאתר תרבות מורשת עולמית במסגרת פרויקט 'זיכרון עולם'. דב נוי הפך לחוקר בעל שם עולמי בחקר הפולקלור והסיפור העממי, במקביל לעיסוקו כחוקר ספרות עברית ויידיש. נוסף על כך ניהל במשך קרוב ל-40 שנה את המוזיאון לאתנולוגיה ולפולקלור בעיריית חיפה. בשנת 1968 הקים דב נוי את המרכז לחקר הפולקלור באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים. דב נוי זכה בפרסים רבים, ביניהם פרס ביאליק בשנת 2002 ופרס ישראל לחקר הספרות בשנת 2004.
Dov Noy (1920-2013) was born in Kolomyia, Poland. He immigrated to Israeli in 1938 and began studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. During WWII he volunteered with the British army and in 1947 headed the Department of Education and Culture in the refugee camps in Cyprus. Meeting his brother there by chance, he would there learn that they were the only members of the family to survive the Holocaust. After serving as editor of children's literary magazine Davar Leyiladim, he continued his studies In the United States, and in 1954 completed his Ph.D. in folklore under Stith Thompson from the University of Indiana. He began teaching Jewish folk literature in the Departments of Hebrew Literature and Yiddish at the Hebrew University and later at the University of Haifa. In 1956 he established the Museum of Ethnology and Folklore in Haifa and set up the Israel Folktale Archive (IFA) the largest collection of Jewish folktales in the world, an accomplishment which would be instrumental in earning him the highly estimated Israel Prize in literature in 2004. Noy's teaching career took him to universities in Australia, England, Russia, Canada, the United States and Argentina, and his correspondences would take place in fluent English, Hebrew, Yiddish, Polish, Russian, and German. Noy's superb memory, his profound knowledge of Jewish folklore, and warm personality helped him maintain a vast network of friends, colleagues, and acquaintances from around the world. Reflecting this, his personal archive is extensive, diverse, and comprehensive.
