Title כינוס מרכז הליכוד.
Additional Titles Likud Party Central Meeting. [picture]
Scope and content Tuesday 19 October Likud Party members discussed their ideas on a response to the Government's “Gaza/Jericho First" plan at a meeting of their organization's sovereign decision making body, the central committee. Chairman Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu's ideas were well received. He detailed his plans for party strategy as follows: That there should be a public campaign to gather "the widest possible opposition" to the agreement
That alternatives to the Government's position should be presented within the framework of the agreement
That there be a push for restriction of Palestinian autonomy to areas of dense Palestinian autonomy - and then only outside "security areas", IDF bases and all parts of Jerusalem
That the IDF must retain complete freedom of movement, control of water resources and all border areas
That the Palestinian right of return be restricted to those individuals that left in 1967 and who in the process split families.
Member of Knesset (MK) Meir Sheetrit, who defied the Likud Party Whips during the Knesset vote on the agreement by abstaining, was jeered as he spoke to the meeting. MK Uzi Landau noted how hard it was to battle against the country's current euphoric pro-peace mood and derided Netanyahu's attempt to present alternatives to the plan as "trying to be fashionable". MK Ariel Sharon called for increased construction in Jewish areas of the territories and in Jerusalem. Before implementation the proposals discussed will be sent to the party's Executive and must then return to the central committee for ratification.
