The collection includes typescripts of Rabbi Henry Pereira Mendes' English translation of the Torah (Pentateuch) and various versions of his introduction to this translation and to his other writings, all typed. Most of the materials are Xerox copies made from the original documents. The collection include also material about the Jewish Community of New York City.

Biographical summary |
Rabbi Dr. Henry Pereira Mendes was one of the religious leaders of Sephardic orthodox Jewry in the United States. He was born in Birmingham, England, in 1857 and studied at Northwick College, University College London and later graduated from the New York University Faculty of Medicine in 1884. In 1874 he became minister of the Manchester Sephardic congregation. In 1877 Mendes emigrated to the U.S.A. and became head of the Shearith Israel congregation of New York. In 1881 he was one of the founders of the New York Board of Ministers, and in 1901 he was elected its president. Mendes was professor at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. Henry Pereira Mendes died in New York in 1937. |

This collection was permanently deposited at the Jewish National and University Library in May 1977, by his son, Dr. Samuel Pereira Mendes, of Beverly Hills, California. The material about the Jewish Community of New York City was permanently deposited at the Jewish National and University Library in April-May 1929 by the Rabbi Mendes. |
