Collection of Torah scroll cases from Syria.

The Collection of Torah scroll cases from Syria includes Torah scroll cases, two of which are smaller, for the handling of children. The cases were brought from Syria by Rabbi Avraham Hamra - chief rabbi of the Syrian Jewish community, who sat in Damascus at the time. Unlike other items brought by Jewish immigrants to Israel during the twentieth century, the dates of the cases are known for certain and therefore, can be a basis for researching and examining Syrian Torah cases documented all around the country. The rabbi brought over one hundred cases, and a small number of them was brought to the National Library for safe keeping.

האוסף כולל שבעה תיקים לספרי תורה. שניים מהם קטנים ומיועדים לילדים. התיקים הוברחו מסוריה על ידי הרב אברהם חמרה – רבה של קהילת סוריה, שישב אז בדמשק. לאוסף זה יש חשיבות מיוחדת, כיוון שבניגוד לכל החפצים האחרים שהובאו בידי המהגרים היהודים מתחילת המאה העשרים ובמהלכה - מקור התיקים ומרבית תיארוכם ידועים אשר על כן, מהווים בסיס ואבן בוחן לתיקים לתורה מסוריה, שתועדו ברחבי הארץ. הרב הבריח למעלה ממאה תיקים, שרק חלקם הקטן הועבר לאוסף הספרייה הלאומית, למשמרת.
